Luca wanted to represent his adventure guiding services with a logo. He enlisted my help with an open brief, simply wanting a fun and handmade feel. I appreciated the freedom, and following a draft was able to produce the design you see here.
Iconography
Situated in the Magaliesberg, Luca offers hikes and adventures in the area’s ancient mountains and wonderful nature reserves. To represent the area, I included a Scarlet River Lily and Southern Rock Agama in the illustration. These species act as a hint towards the colourful and striking nature you’ll experience when on a trail with Barefoot Nomads Adventures.
Creating the illustrations by hand
I explored different layouts and worked with the client’s feedback to create the final composition. I scanned these initial drawings and used Figma to illustrate over the lines to turn the design into a vector. A vector format allows Luca to reproduce the illustration at any size, like large format prints, without a loss in detail.
Choosing a typeface
We chose the slab serif typeface ‘courier’ to echo an old-style reminiscent of stories written to friends using typewriters. The lettering looks rustic and works alongside the grit, grain and texture of the illustration.
Exploring with colour
Taking inspiration from the colours found in the area, I chose six to use across the illustration. The full-colour version includes three tones of grey and pure black for lines and text.
Branding additional elements
Taking the opportunity to explore where Luca’s logo may be used, I mocked up an envelope, t-shirt, and vehicle branding. These examples help to place the logo in real-life situations and can be a great inspiration to further our work together.
